According to the hierarchical ranking imposed on art after the 17th century, the so-called “sporting picture” (insofar as it existed as a genre at all) was very low down the pecking order. Images of shooting, hunting and horse-racing were deemed far less worthy than, say, history paintings or Classical allegories.
