There are 33 in all, many boasting the softest and whitest sands imaginable; Shoal Bay East, which has a few enticing beach bars, is the most popular. In the peak winter months, Anguilla is a bolthole of choice for well-heeled Americans, including lots of celebrities. As well as the beaches, they are attracted by the handful of extremely luxurious hotels, the plethora of lavish, ultra-modern villas, and the many upmarket restaurants. That said, there is some appealing, affordable accommodation (see charmingescapescollection.com), and some good, no-frills places to eat such as roadside grills. Inland, Anguilla is flattish, arid and scrubby, and not exactly attractive, and sightseeing is pretty limited - though the Heritage Collection Museum gives a fascinating insight into the island’s quirky history.
