Set up in 1937 by the left-wing poet Charles Madge, film-maker Humphrey Jennings and ethnologist Tom Harrisson, the aim of MO was to provide a bottom-up portrait of everyday Britain – one which mattered little, its founders felt, to press and politicians alike. Field workers and amateur observers were sent to report on all manner of public behaviour, while 500 volunteers kept diaries and answered questionnaires at regular intervals.
